Just north of Capitol Hill and a hop across the water from Seattle’s University District is Portage Bay, a primarily residential, relaxed little pocket of the city that sits comfortably on the eastern arm of Lake Union. It boasts two yacht clubs—not a surprise, considering its proximity to the water—and a well-known houseboat and floating home community.
The peacefulness and sense of calm this neighborhood exhibits belies its closeness to downtown—its residents are just minutes from popular centers of commerce and industry, like South Lake Union, Eastlake, the University District, and via 520, from Eastside cities like Bellevue. But the homes here, if not sitting directly on the water, are surrounded by large, verdant gardens and tree-lined streets, giving properties here some much-desired privacy and protection from the commotion in other parts of the city. It’s hard to believe this serene neighborhood is still in the heart of Seattle!
